from your kids? >> the real truth. what's motherhood in tinseltown really like? celebrity secrets, "mommywood" starts now. >> good evening, i'm juju chang. tonight, we go inside hollywood, where it seems the newest celebrity must-have is children. we'll talk with some of the most famous moms in the business about the pressure of raising picture-perfect kids in the white-hot glare of fame. we begin with denise richards, charlie sheen's ex-wife, now a single mom. i talked to denise about dealing with divorce, addiction, and the madness surrounding her ex. she's the ex-wife of one of hollywood's biggest train wrecks. in the annals of celebrity motherhood, denise richards might have the toughest job of all. shielding her kids from their father's drama. >> my first thing is to protect them. once they're protected and all the other stuff, that's all that matters to me. >> reporter: is there a way that

you can quarantine your daughters from any of the substance abuse? >> they're not around any of that. >> reporter: they aren't? >> no, god no. >> reporter: how do you ensure that -- >> i ensure that. if that's what's going on, we'll see you next week. >> reporter: he's actually forced her to talk with her kids about addiction. >> it was a conversation i thought i would have years from now and unfortunately i had to have it a little earlier than i thought. i was lying so much to them and making excuses and i just had to explain, this is what's been going on. >> reporter: denise tells us she works hard to do what so many divorced women struggle with. getting along with the ex, for the sake of the kids. >> charlie and i will be in each other's lives for the rest of our lives. if i want to be mad all the time and create drama around these crazy circumstances, it's toxic energy and i just don't want that. >> reporter: denise says she wrote her new memoir "the real girl next door" because she believes her story is universal.

> think a lot of women, they can't relate to being married to charlie sheen or divorcing him, but they can relate to a divorce and how did it make them feel and the feelings of anger and hurt and sadness. >> reporter: and how are things between you and charlie now? >> today they're great. today we're good. >> reporter: and the visitation works well? >> i take it day by day and today we're in a really good place. >> reporter: you go to the visitation? >> yeah, we're one big happy family. >> reporter: lovely. >> i think it's good and it's important for the girls to see that we get along. >> reporter: and when it's not a good day? >> i never say we're going to see dad and have it not happen. i wait until the last minute and see how things are. >> reporter: last october, things seemed just fine as the divorced couple took the kids on an unusual family trip to new york. but what began as a visit to the american girl doll store turned into a night that exploded in scandal. >> it started out as an idyllic weekekd. we had a great time until a

certain incident happened and it kind of went south. >> reporter: an incident at the plaza hotel with police on the scene and sheen in the hospital, accused of assault. >> developing story. >> charlie sheen hospitalized. >> bizarre episode. >> drunk and incoherent. >> police say he trashed a suite. >> reporter: what puzzled everyone is why denise was at the dinner party where it all started. why do you think he invited you along? >> i asked him that and he said, i didn't want you to feel left out. >> reporter: that was sweet. >> i thought it was sweet. >> reporter: why did you say yes? >> i thought it was nice. he and i could have a grown up night with friends. >> reporter: friendsds >> and that's what i thought it was. >> reporter: but those friends turned out to be paid escorts. >> i knew within 20 minutes, less than that. i know my ex-husband well and he kind of likes that sort of entertainment. it didn't take long for me to put two and two together. >> reporter: denise found herself sitting next to porn

star capri anderson, who wound up naked, locked in sheen's hotel bathroom. capri even asked to take a picture with her. tmz.e photos were later sold to denise says she left the dinner early. and her kids slept through the whole commotion across the hall. >> all they know is they had a great time in new york with their mom and dad. that's all i care about. >> reporter: before her turbulent marriage, denise richards was best known for her role in the thriller "wild things" which featured a racy lesbian love scene. that role led to bond girl status playing a hot nuclear scientist in "the world is not enough." >> dr. jones. christmas jones. and don't make any jokes. i've heard them all. >> reporter: she then fell in love with sheen on the set of "spin city." >> you 1/2 done would have ton the same thing. >> you can't go by me. i'm legendary for my bad judgment. >> reporter: by comparison, you're a goody two shoes. how did you fall in love with him? >> the man that i divorced was not the man i married. when i met him, he was sober for three years.

i admired his sobriety and how he worked on himself and how humble he was. we just had a deep connection. >> reporter: it was s whirlwind romance. within eight months, they were married, and it wasn't long before they had a daughter. >> once my first daughter was born, sammy, i knew, okay, this is what i'm supposed to do. i felt complete, though a lot of people say, nobody can complete you. i feel that my children did. >> reporter: five months after sammy's birth, denise did something unthinkable for most new moms. she posed nude. >> i was having problems in my marriage and i just had a baby. >> reporter: moms can be sexy. >> moms can be sexy. and i think the other part of it was, inside, i didn't feel sexy. >> reporter: denise was six months pregnant with lola when she left her marriage. >> it was not an easy decision. it was very, very difficult. i loved him so much and leaving, i felt so guilty. >> reporter: why guilty? >> guilty of splitting up my family. i felt bad for the kids. guilty that, you know, we were a

failure as a couple. >> reporter: what ensued was one of hollywood's nastiest divorces. then, more controversy. her romance with richie sambora, who was divorcing heather r locklear. denise thinks all the bad press hurt her career. >> i supposedly stole a well-known actress' husband and i was battling america's number one sitcom star, so -- >> reporter: in the courts and in the press. >> it was very hard for me to comprehend that my personal life would affect my career. >> reporter: what people didn't realize at the time was that denise agreed to do her reality show "it's complicated" because she felt she had no choice. >> i needed a paycheck. my funds dried up with all my legal fees. it was tough. i had to take a job. >> reporter: sammy and lola didn't mind the cameras. for the e! show which ran for two years. but they just don't like the paparazzi. >> a lot of people say, your kids look so unhappy in

pictures. they're not unhappy children. they just don't like paparazzi. >> reporter: these days, denise stars in the spike tv show "blue mountain state." she's launching a hair care line, a perfume, and in what's left of her spare time, she works with abused animals. >> hi, scooter. you've been through a lot. >> reporter: do you see it as a metaphor for your life that you're taking in wounded creatures and trying to heal them? >> i take a lot of wounded people into my life. i've always been that way. if my mom were alive, she would be able to tell you stories. >> reporter: denise lost her mom to cancer in the midst of all her recent turmoil. now, she's raising her daughters and gutting her house, alone, with the help of grand pa. >> there's my dad. >> reporter: dating is tricky in mommywood. >> are you building a his closet? >> he does. i have a lot of baggage, good baggage, but it's a lot. i need a very strong man and

someone who would be a great father figure or dad. >> reporter: she's also not waiting around for a partner to have more kids. just last month, denise adopted a little girl. what made you adopt? >> i love being a mom more than anything and i wanted to have more children and i had to make a decision. do i wait until i meet the right person or do i keep moving forward with my life and do it on my own? >> reporter: what was it like to bring the baby home? >> she is so incredible and my daughters were -- are so in love with her. >> reporter: it was a domestic adoption of a now 7 week old black, white and hispanic little girl named after denise's mother, jonie. eloise jonie richards. >> oh my god! >> reporter: denene celebrated her arrival with a baby shower. >> so cute. she's just a beautiful, gorgeous. the right baby found me. and next, tori spelling on whether putting kids in front of the spotlight can hurt them.

that say, oh, you're a great mom, we get to see you're a hands on mom. none of it is fake. >> reporter: the real mommywood isn't just a place where your kitchen is filled with makeup artists, but also the occasional farm animal. the zoo has everything to do with the other tori spelling. the one who is out to prove she can raise kids hollywood but wholesome. an earth mother with silicone implants. life as a celebrity mom is a far cry from the role that made her famous. starring as donna in "beverly hills 90210," the '90s hit that made growing upn that zip code very glamorous. >> please believeme. i didn't plan to get drunk. >> reporter: in contrast, her reality show about raising a family seems determined to show that life in her hometown is not always glamorous. >> boy. >> are you serious?

my first ultrasound with liam that we filmed, i was five months pregnant and i look back at that footage and i'm like, i have five chins. and i panicked and i was like, calm down, this is what you signed up. you said you wanted to do this. i had a moment and after i said, that's it. >> you can't take a picture of my house. you know it's illegal. >> [ bleep ] you. >> reporter: there's a huge line between the welcome cameras and unwelcome. >> absolutely. people are say, oh, you're angry about the paparazzi stalking you and doing things and taking pictures of your kids. but yet, you have reality cameras in your home and i'm very quick to say, it's completely different. the cameras in our house is a welcome crew. they're family. they're people we hang out with. and i trust if something is happening, they're going to put down the cameras and they're going to help my child. if something were to happen out in the public, they want to get it on film.

they don't want to help my child. >> oh, my god. he's attacking the paparazzi. oh, no. >> sean penn. way to go. sean penn. >> big scare for tori spelling. >> so glad they're all okay. >> reporter: and just last month, her bat with the paparazzi came to a head. while trying to escape them, she crashed her car into this brick wall. was the car accident actually caused by the paparazzi? >> the bottom line is, it was caused by me. was it induced because of paparazzi, yes. >> reporter: it must have shaken you up. >> yeah. i was frozen. i was kind of -- and then when all the moms ran over, i was terribly embarrassed because i felt like -- i i feel like i tr really hard to fit in and be a normal mom and i started crying and i apologized to the moms and they were like, what are you crying about? we feel terrible this happened. i'm sorry, i'm sorry i broughtht this here. >> reporter: more than anything,

house in hollywood, a family palace complete with 27 bathrooms. she's well aware of how painful it can be to grow up in the cruel glare of hollywood spotlight. her dad cast her in the role that made her a star but then she spent her way towards bankruptcy and didn't want to ask her father to bail her out. you never picked up the phone and asked for that kind of help? >> i never would. it just made me go, okay, got to work, got to go. let's go. let's do it. >> reporter: so, together with her new husband, dean mcdermott, she launched a hit reality show titled, "tori and dean inn love." and that's how it started. they allowed the cameras to role when he son was born. >> love you, liam. >> reporter: and then stella. >> you want to kiss the baby? >> stella. >> reporter: but in 2009, tori's own mother wrote an open letter to tmz, slamming tori for using
